The Raid (2011) is a high-octane Indonesian action thriller written, directed, and edited by Gareth Evans. Starring Iko Uwais, who previously collaborated with Evans on Merantau (2009), the film follows an elite SWAT team tasked with infiltrating a high-rise building controlled by a ruthless drug lord in the heart of Jakarta's slums. Among the squad is Rama (played by Uwais), a seasoned and skilled fighter, who quickly finds himself fighting for survival after the mission goes awry.
After its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), The Raid received widespread critical acclaim for its heart-pounding action and brutal fight choreography. Due to rights issues in the US, the film was rebranded as The Raid: Redemption, a title that also set the stage for potential sequels. The US release of the film featured an intense score by Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park and composer Joseph Trapanese. The film was released on DVD and Blu-ray in the United States on August 14, 2012.
The film is widely recognized for showcasing pencak silat, a traditional Indonesian martial art, with Uwais and Yayan Ruhian choreographing the thrilling fight scenes. The success of The Raid led to the creation of a sequel, The Raid 2 (2014), which continued the story with even more elaborate action sequences and a deeper plot. While a third installment was discussed, Evans ultimately decided not to pursue it.
